Menu (1 st) and Huff (3 rd) Confirm the Good Moment of the Lacettis, while Larini (14 th) Pays the Toll to Success Ballast
PAU , 1st June 2007 – The Chevrolet Lacetti WTC of Alain Menu set the fastest time in today’s free testing session in Pau, ahead of the seventh and eight rounds of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). It was the first time ever that WTCC cars raced in the streets of the beautiful city in the French Pyrenees, which hosts one of the most historic and demanding circuits in the world. Alain Menu used well the advantage of knowing the circuit from his single-seater days and of running on low ballast (5 kg) to score the best time in the 30-minute session, held with dry weather after the storms that broke in the morning. The excellent form of the Chevrolet Lacettis WTC was confirmed by the third fastest time of Rob Huff, who had never raced in Pau before. Also a new-comer in the French track, Nicola Larini finished the session in 14 th position, quite a good result knowing that his car is one of the heaviest in this WTCC round, having to carry a 45 kg success ballast.
QUOTES
Alain Menu: “It is a good start of the week-end, but there is room for improving the car. In the tight corners, I had excessive under-steer, we need to find more grip on the front wheels. We are going to work in this direction during free practice tomorrow and qualifying will be, of course, very important in a track where over-taking is almost impossible. We can be happy of today’s result but it won’t be an easy week-end, as we can expect the competition to reduce the gap in tomorrow’s practices”.
Rob Huff: “I am very pleased with today’s result. I started slowly, in order to learn the track progressively, and that was a wise thing to do. As from this race I am back in the chassis I used last year and with which I won in Brno, and I am delighted with it. It’s the best-balanced car I had so far this season. For tomorrow, I will only change the seat position and make it a little bit higher, as it is very difficult to see the kerbs”.
Nicola Larini: “I spent most of the session learning the track. When I put on my second set of tyres I did a little mistake in the Foch corner, hitting the kerb and breaking the right front shock absorber, which unfortunately brought me to a long stop in the pits”.
Mark Busfield: “The event is starting well and let’s hope we can continue like this throughout the week-end. Alain had a great session and Rob proved that he learnt the circuit quickly. Nicola also did a good job, he is where we expected him to be given the extra weight he is carrying in this race”.
