CHEVROLET TRAIN NETS FOURTH AND FIFTH ON GRID

Slipstreaming Is Name Of The Game In Monza Qualifying

MONZA , 6th October 2007 - Qualifying for tomorrow, the final European round of the 2007 World Touring Car Championship, was all about slipstreaming at Monza , today. The second free practice session and the qualifying session saw the Chevrolet Lacettis of Alain Menu, Nicola Larini and Rob Huff lapped the track like a high speed train. All three cars ran bumper to bumper on each of the three qualifying runs, whereby the first car punched a hole in the air and the second one dispersed the turbulent air wake of the first so the third car would have as little air resistance as possible. This formation, which the team practiced earlier, netted fourth and fifth place for Larini and Menu respectively behind the unbeatable diesel cars, almost one second off pole position. Last year's qualifying at Monza saw the first 15 cars qualify within one second; this year 18 cars qualified within one second of the diesels. In the Championship, Chevrolet still heads the unofficial pole position standings with four units, against SEAT's three, BMW's two and Alf Romeo's one.

QUOTES

Nicola Larini (4 th): "I really wanted to start on the front row here, but it was just impossible to beat the diesels on a fast track like Monza . I guess a podium finish is what we should try to go for tomorrow, but even that will be difficult. I'm sorry I couldn't give Rob a tow on the last run, but I ran wide in the chicane and lost the momentum there."

Alain Menu (5th): "The slipstreaming worked fantastic today, which shows how close we work together as a team. We only tried this for the first time this morning in the free practice session as on other tracks we don't really need this kind of strategy to go fast. Tomorrow we'll try to keep up with the diesels by slipstreaming some more, but I'm not sure how many laps we'll be able to stay with them."

Rob Huff (16th): "All three of us ran one run at the head of the "train", one run in the middle, and one run at the back to qualify. Unfortunately on my turn Alain got a bit close to Nic so he got out of the "train" to leave me some room to close up to Nic. But then he ran wide at the chicane so I lost my tow and thus my only chance at a proper time. I guess I'll need some luck to score some points this weekend, but as always we'll just go for it and play with the hand I've been dealt."

Eric Nève: "This qualifying session was all about getting all three cars out simultaneously and preferably on a clear stretch of track. The team mastered this to near-perfection and it worked very well for Alain and Nicola, but unfortunately Rob was a bit unlucky on his attempt. Yet I'm sure we'll have another great race tomorrow for our last European round and I'm equally sure our guests will love the show."
