Learning Process On New Tyres Continues

ALBACETE, 28 February 2006 — RML and Chevrolet continued their winter test programme at the Albacete track in Spain this week. All three drivers were present for two days of development tests, mainly concentrating on setting up the chassis and suspensions and making them work with the new regulatory Yokohama tyres.

“We spent both days doing short runs with all three cars,” Team Manager, Mark Busfield explained. “This was our first opportunity to use the Yokohama Advan tyres on a dry track, although it was cool (9°C) and windy on the first day. All three drivers felt that the 2006-spec tyres are considerably different from those used last year, but of course this will be the same for everybody. On the second day it was warmer outside (15°C), so that gave us a first real opportunity to try and understand the tyres in the dry and in normal temperatures. Once we have a full understanding of the tyres' behaviour in a neutral environment we can start to move forward in other areas.”

Nicola Larini spent the two days concentrating on suspension set-ups. “On the first day we tried a number of different suspension settings. Apart from that we worked a lot on the tyre pressure and temperatures. The new tyres have a different shape from last year's Michelins, so that adds another new factor to the equation.”

“The Yokohamas have a more rounded shoulder, where the Michelins where square,” Alain Menu continued, “which means we have less lateral grip than we had last year. This was my first time on Yokohamas in the dry and I immediately felt we'll have to work in a different way to find the right set-up. It makes it more challenging for drivers and engineers alike, but all in all I feel both days have been very productive.”

Next week, a four-day test at Magny Cours is scheduled, the last big test of the winter test programme before team, drivers and cars will meet the competition at the official FIA test days in Monza, Italy at the end of March.
