22 Cars Qualify Within One Second

VALENCIA, 7 October 2006 - The Chevrolet WTCC team confirmed its continuing improvement of form in today's qualifying session at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain. All three drivers set very competitive times at the same track where the team had its best qualifying result of the season in last year's championship. Alain Menu set fourth time, Nicola Larini was sixth and Rob Huff qualified in 13th. A record 22 cars out of a total of 25, qualified within one second of the pole position time.

"Everything came together quite well," Menu said. "My first flying lap was OK, but nothing special, as I braked a bit too early in two corners. The car also had some understeer which we dialled out by going stiffer on the rear roll bar and a bit softer on the front, which made the car steer in better. And then all came together nicely. It was a good team effort and I'm especially happy for the boys who managed to turn the car around after this morning's difficult free practice session."

Nicola Larini was happy with his qualifying performance, but at the same time was convinced he could have qualified on the second row of the grid. "I'm quite happy, but unfortunately I lost two tenths in the first sector of my fastest lap. When I started the lap, two other cars exited the pits and stayed on the racing line at the wrong place of the track where you can't pass easily. I didn't improve my time in that first sector, so all the time I gained I did in sectors two and three. But I'm happy for the team, as the results shows that we are on a roll at this end of season. Needless to say that with my grid position for race one, I'm quite confident for race two."

Rob Huff was less fortunate and got outqualified by both his team mates for the first time this year. "My last set of tyres wasn't as good as the previous ones, so we went a bit stiffer on the front bar. But that obviously wasn't the way to go. We just missed the boat I suppose."

The two privateer Lacettis of the Swiss Maurer Motorsport team had a difficult qualifying session. Maria De Villota, the first ever lady driver in the history of the WTCC, qualified last, while Vincent Radermecker, her Belgian team mate and newly crowned German Touring Car Champion, didn't qualify at all after the cam shaft of his engine broke in the second free practice session.”
