LARINI QUALIFIES SIXTH BEFORE RAIN BRINGS END
TO FAST RUNS

ISTANBUL, 23 September 2006 – Chevrolet driver Nicola Larini made the best use of a light car at the Istanbul Park circuit today by qualifying in sixth position. Brno-winner Rob Huff set the 14th fastest time, while Alain Menu got caught out by sudden heavy rain which all but ended the proceedings, the Swiss driver thus not being able to better his 22nd time.

The single qualifying session was barely ten minutes old when heavy rain set in and made any attempt at going quickly a purely academic exercise. Larini had just set his best personal qualifying time since joining Chevrolet and the WTCC last year, and felt he could even have gone faster. “The car felt really good,” he said. “I’m sure that on my second set of tyres I could have set a time good for third or fourth on the grid. Obviously, the weather decided otherwise.”

Rob Huff was 14th fastest and was happy with his time, considering he is carrying 15 kilograms of success weight after his Brno win. “We had planned to make some small changes to the rollbar settings for each set of tyres, but obviously we only managed to put just one on. In the wet the car felt good as well, although I didn’t push. Should it rain tomorrow we should be competitive”

Alain Menu could not profit from his Brands Hatch WTCC-winning rain-experience. Engine problems in the free practice sessions in the morning limited his track time, while in the qualifying session the lack of laps made itself felt when he ran wide in the downhill Turn 1 on his first timed lap. “After I had done a second lap, the rain started coming down so there was no point in continuing, especially since the car understeered quite badly already in the dry. It will be an interesting exercise tomorrow, as I have never started so far back. But Rob did so last race and look where he finished!”
